Waiver Wire Pickups

Every week I am going to go over the top waiver wire pickups at every position and what you can expect from them.

Quarterback:

Michael Vick, Eagles: Michael Vick should be the top QB on peopled waiver list this week after replacing the injured Kevin Kolb on Sunday. It was vintage Vick  as he tried to lead Philly to a comeback victory over the Packers. Vick ended up throwing for 175 yards and 1 TD. He also added another 103 yards rushing. Its looks as though Kolb will be sidelined this week because of the concussion  and Vick should be considered a top 10 QB this week with the Eagles going up against the Lions. If Vick plays well again don't be surprised to hear the calls from him to start in Philly get even louder than they are right now.

David Garrard: Garrard lead the Jaguars on Sunday with 3 TD passes and completing 16 of 21 for 170 yards. Garrard can be a hit or miss guy at the quarterback position. He has shown flashes in the past of a starter worthy player in 12 team fantasy leagues. If you are QB-needy and add miss out on Vick take a chance on Garrard and play the matchups with him.

Matt Hasselbeck, Seahawks: Hasselbeck looked good in the Seahawk's big upset victory over the Niners 31-6. Hasselbeck completed 18 of his 23 pass attempts for 170 yards and 3 TDs (1 rushing). Hasselbeck shouldn't be counted on as a every week starter but if he continues to play well he could be a good bye week fill-in for your team.

Running Backs:

Brandon Jackson, Packers: With the season ending injury to Ryan Grant,  Brandon Jackson becomes top waiver wire pickup of the week. Brandon Jackson will be the main back in Green Bay and should put up numbers close to what you were expecting out of Grant. It should be noted that Brandon Jackson was the Packers 3rd down back so Jackson will be an every down back unlike Ryan Grant. Only thing is that Jackson could lose touches at the goal line to FB John Kuhn.

Peyton Hillis, Browns: It was thought with the season ending injury to Montario Hardesty that late season star Jerome Harrison would reclaim the #1 RB spot in Cleveland. But that wasn't the case, Peyton Hillis looked to be in the game more than Harrison even though both backs had the same number of carries. Hillis though appears to be the red zone back in Cleveland after scoring a 10 yard TD after a Harrison 39 yard run. Hillis is also being used in the short passing collecting 4 passes for 24 yards to go along with his 41 rushing yards. If you are in a bigger league and lose out on Brandon Jackson take a shot with Hillis.

Bernard Scott, Bengals: If you have seen this kid play you he has the talent to be a starter in this league. Scott is behind Cedric Benson in Cincy and gets a limited number of touches because of it. Scott only totaled 9 touches in the Bengals loss on Sunday but on those 9 he gained 50 yards total. Benson on other hand had 16 total touches but only gained 4 more yards the Scott. Look for Scott to get more touches and maybe make the Bengals a committee backfield by midseason if he continues to do well with the limited amount of touches he gets.

Wide Receivers: If Austin Collie, Eddie Royal, and Devin Aromashodu are not on rosters in you league they are the top 3 WR pick ups of the week. If not here are a few that should be.

Mark Clayton, Rams: Mark Clayton never panned out in Baltimore and when they signed TJ Houshmanzedah Clayton was expendable. The WR needy Rams jumped on Clayton and traded for him at the end of the presason. Mark Clayton stepped in as Sam Bradfords (both went to Oklahoma) #1 option and it paid off. Clayton was targeted 16 times by Bradford and hauled in 10 of those targets for 119 yards. The Rams should be down most of the time this year so they could be throwing a lot. That means Clayton if he stays healthy could have a nice season in St. Louis and finish as a WR3.

Legendu Naanee, Chargers: With the holdout of Vincent Jackson someone needed to replace him in the Chargers offense. The preseason hype was on Malcom Floyd but last night Legendu Naanee appeared to be the better option. Naanee hauled in a 59 yard TD on a very badly blow coverage by the Chiefs. Naanee finished the night with 5 catches for 110 yards and 1 TD. Rivers looked to go Naanee ways more than Floyd on key downs last night. Naanee can't be expected to put those type of numbers up every game but he should be on fantasy rosters in bigger leagues as a WR4/ Flex play.

Tight Ends

Jermaine Gresham. Bengals: Highly touted rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham hauled in 6 passes on Sunday for 25 yards and 1 TD. Palmer has looked to be in sync with Gresham once the Bengals get into the red zone and looks to the young tight end when other options are shut down. With Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens occupy the attention of most opposing teams defensive backfields Gresham has the talented and ability to make opposing teams to pay when they lineup a linebacker or safety on him. Look for Gresham to potentially finish the season as a top ten 10.

Todd Heap, Ravens: 4 short years ago Todd Heap was considered a top 5 TE in fantasy football. But after a couple injury plagued seasons Heap fell out of favor for fantasy owners. But late last season Heap showed some life and appeared to finally be healthy ending last year with 53 catches for 593 yards and 6 TDs. Last night Todd Heap hauled in 6 Joe Flacco passes for 72 yards. Heap had the early candidate for catch of the year beating safety Jim Leonhard on a play that saw Heap lay out for a 35 yard reception. It should be noted that Heap tweaked his shoulder on the play but the injury inst believed to be serious. With the addition of Anquan Boldin and TJ Houshmandzedah, Heap could have a nice season in Baltimore. If Heap can stay healthy he could return to the top 10 tight area this season.

Defense

New England Patriots: The New England revamped defense looked good against the Bengals. The new editions to the defense played well and with Brandon Tate returning kicks they could become a fantasy starter defense/special team in no time.
